Richford Road is smooth again, a cyclist's dream

"Joy Hill" drop of 150m in 2 km delivers views, thrills

EDEN MUIR, FRELIGHSBURG, 2009/07/21. Work proceeded this week on the repaving of "Joy Hill" just east of Frelighsburg. The entire length of Richford Road is slated for resurfacing this summer, all the way to Abercorn. The highway department was busy compacting gravel shoulders yesterday. Of course, paved sholders would be a welcome sight on a steep country road that is shared by trucks, cars and bicycles.

Joy Hill is a famous local landmark, where many of us headed as soon as we got behind the wheel of a car at age 16. It was a double thrill -- on the way up at full speed, you tested your engine's power-to-weight ratio; on the way down you tested your nerves.

This spectacular stretch of road quickly descends from 250 meters above sea level near Abbott's Corner, to just above 100m as it terminates at the village. A 150m vertical drop along a horizontal distance of just over 2 km -- not bad!

The smooth new Joy Hill is sure to be appreciated by Frelighsburg's growing crowds of cyclists -- it's the greatest thrill in town.
